Boat Trailer Weight and Towing Capacity Calculator

Total the trailer, boat, engine, fuel, batteries, gear and other load. Then estimate tongue weight and check the plan against the tow vehicle rating, payload, GCWR, hitch limit and trailer GVWR in pounds or kilograms.

The lowest applicable rating controlsThis is a screening calculation, not a safety approval. Use exact labels and documentation, avoid double-counting included weights, and verify the travel-ready combination, tongue and axle loads on suitable scales before towing.

Example values are prefilled. Replace every figure with actual values for the exact travel-ready setup.

Vehicle and hitch limits

Use the rating for the exact vehicle configuration.

Use the exact vehicle’s tire-and-loading label.

Use the lowest applicable vehicle, receiver, ball mount or ball limit.

Maximum loaded combination rating.

Scale weight with fuel, people, cargo and hitch gear.

Include everyone in the tow vehicle.

Include coolers, luggage, accessories and towing equipment.

How to check a boat towing setup

  1. Find the exact labels. Use the tow vehicle, hitch and trailer labels plus their current manuals; model-line maximums may not apply.
  2. Separate included weights. Determine whether boat weight includes the engine, installed batteries, fluids and options. Enter each item once.
  3. Load it as towed. Include fuel, anchors, electronics, covers, coolers, safety gear, water and everything else carried on the trailer.
  4. Check all ratings. The calculator turns vehicle payload and hitch tongue limits into trailer-weight constraints and compares every entered limit.
  5. Measure the real setup. Verify total, axle and tongue weights at normal towing height; inspect securement, tires, brakes, bearings, coupler and lights.

Formulas and assumptions

Fuel weight = volume × 6.1 lb/US gal (0.73 kg/L)
Loaded boat trailer = trailer + boat + separate engine + fuel + batteries/gear + other load
Estimated tongue weight = loaded boat trailer × tongue percentage
Vehicle payload used = occupants + vehicle cargo/hitch gear + tongue weight
GCWR headroom = GCWR − travel-ready vehicle weight before coupling

Payload-derived and hitch-derived limits divide the remaining allowable load by the entered tongue-weight fraction. The result identifies the smallest entered trailer-weight constraint. Fuel density is only a planning value; temperature and fuel blend change actual density.

Boat trailer weight FAQs

How is loaded boat trailer weight calculated?

Add the actual empty trailer, boat, engine if excluded from boat weight, carried fuel, batteries, equipment, gear and every other item on the trailer. Avoid using brochure dry figures without checking what they omit.

Does boat fuel count toward towing weight?

Yes. This tool estimates gasoline at 6.1 lb per US gallon or 0.73 kg per litre. Use measured total trailer weight for a final check because density and actual volume vary.

What tongue-weight percentage should I enter?

Use the range specified for the exact boat trailer, coupler, hitch and tow vehicle. Published boat-trailer guidance varies—for example, some manuals use 5–7% and others 7–10%—so a universal default is inappropriate. Measure the actual load at normal towing height.

Does tongue weight count against vehicle payload?

Yes. Add measured tongue weight to the people, cargo, accessories and hitch equipment carried by the vehicle.

Why is usable towing capacity below the advertised maximum?

Passengers and cargo consume payload and combination capacity. A hitch, trailer, axle, tire or wheel rating can also be lower than the vehicle’s headline trailer rating.

Does a green result mean the setup is safe?

No. It only means the arithmetic is within the values entered. It cannot verify those inputs, load placement, sway, braking, equipment condition, ramp traction or legal requirements.

Are my weights stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and this page does not send or store entered values.

Limits and safety disclaimer

  • This calculator provides planning arithmetic, not an engineering assessment, inspection, weighing, towing recommendation or legal determination.
  • Tongue weight is estimated from a percentage. Load position can materially change the actual value and stability.
  • The tool does not calculate individual axle, tire or wheel loads; weight-distribution-hitch transfer; braking distance; sway stability; frontal-area limits; grade performance; or launch-ramp traction.
  • Saltwater, water in the bilge, added hardware and supplies are easily overlooked. Weigh the actual travel-ready setup.

Safety disclaimer: Never exceed the lowest applicable vehicle, GVWR, GCWR, axle, tire, wheel, hitch, coupler, trailer, brake or component limit. If documentation conflicts or a weight is uncertain, stop and obtain qualified, setup-specific guidance.
