Loaded displacement = base boat weight + all added onboard weight
Compared load = sum of items included in the published capacity scope
Remaining load = allowable compared load − compared load
Displaced water volume = loaded mass ÷ water density
What displacement means here
At rest in static equilibrium, a floating boat displaces water with the same weight as the complete loaded boat. The calculator converts the weight total to mass and divides by a representative water density to estimate the underwater volume.
Density assumptions: 1,000 kg/m³ for freshwater and 1,025 kg/m³ for seawater. Temperature, salinity, and local conditions change actual density, draft, and freeboard.
Choose the matching capacity basis
- Maximum additional load: compares only checked categories with a carried-load rating. The published scope may say people, motor, gear, fluids, luggage, or a different combination.
- Maximum loaded displacement: compares the base boat plus every added item with a total permitted loaded weight. All categories are therefore counted.
Do not mix a dry-weight definition from one source with a capacity definition from another unless their inclusions are known and reconciled.
Weight distribution still matters
A boat can be below its total weight limit and still have unsafe trim or stability. Keep weight low, secure gear against movement, and distribute load according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Avoid concentrating people or cargo on one side or at one end.
- Recheck the plan when passengers move, tanks empty, water enters, or gear shifts.
- Use more conservative loading for adverse wind, waves, current, icing, or restricted freeboard.
How to use this calculator
- Read the builder's plate, owner's manual, certificate, or authority documentation and identify whether the number is an additional-load limit or total loaded displacement.
- Enter the base boat weight and make a written note of what that source includes, such as installed engines, batteries, full fuel, standard equipment, or none of these.
- Enter every weight added beyond that base. Use actual combined passenger weights and measured or documented equipment and fluid weights when possible.
- If using an additional-load rating, check only the categories included in its definition. Every entered item remains part of loaded displacement.
- Review remaining capacity and load distribution, then verify the complete plan against controlling documentation and current operating conditions.
Example load calculation
Suppose a boat's starting weight is 2,800 lb and its published additional-load limit is 1,600 lb. The added load is 540 lb of people, 420 lb of outboard and rigging, 300 lb of fuel, 190 lb of gear, and 60 lb of other items:
Added load = 540 + 420 + 300 + 190 + 60 = 1,510 lb
Loaded displacement = 2,800 + 1,510 = 4,310 lb
The arithmetic leaves 90 lb, with 94.4% of the entered limit used. Because this is close to the limit, measurement uncertainty and loading conditions deserve particular attention. The example does not confirm that every category belongs in a real boat's published limit.
Frequently asked questions
How is loaded boat displacement calculated?
Add the base boat weight and every item added onboard. At static equilibrium, that total weight equals the weight of displaced water. The result is a loading estimate, not a measured naval-architecture displacement survey.
Does this calculator determine a boat's safe or legal capacity?
No. It only compares entered loads with a published figure that you supply. Legal or certified capacity can depend on flotation, stability, freeboard, boat type, dimensions, tests, and jurisdiction-specific rules that this calculator does not reproduce.
Should fuel and water count toward maximum load?
Use the definition printed on the builder's plate or in the owner's manual. Some figures include fluids and some exclude contents of fixed tanks. Uncheck a category only when the controlling additional-load definition excludes it; its weight still contributes to loaded displacement.
What is the difference between dry weight and loaded displacement?
Published dry, bare, lightship, or package weights can include different equipment. Loaded displacement is the complete weight in the actual operating condition: boat, machinery, fluids, people, provisions, cargo, and gear. Check every source's definition to avoid omissions or double counting.
Why does the displaced volume change between fresh and salt water?
Seawater is generally denser, so a given boat weight requires a smaller displaced volume than in freshwater. A boat normally floats slightly deeper in less-dense water, but this tool does not calculate draft or freeboard from hull geometry.
Can a boat be unsafe below its stated weight capacity?
Yes. Total weight is only one part of loading safety. High, shifting, uneven, or poorly secured loads can affect trim and stability, while waves, wind, flooding, modifications, and reduced freeboard add risks the arithmetic cannot evaluate.
What if my boat has no capacity plate?
Check the model-specific owner's manual and contact the manufacturer. Follow applicable local requirements. For an uncertain or modified vessel, obtain guidance from a qualified naval architect, marine engineer, surveyor, or relevant authority instead of inventing a rating from this tool.

- The displaced-volume result uses a representative constant density and cannot determine draft without hull geometry or a hydrostatic table.
- Capacity limits and labeling requirements differ by craft, design category, date, location, and use; follow the controlling documentation and law.
