The vehicle-specific tire-and-loading label is usually the simplest starting point when available.

Manufacturer’s maximum loaded vehicle weight; do not use GCWR.

Planned weight carried by the vehicle

Include the driver.

Use actual combined weight when possible; do not omit the driver.

Include items in the cabin, cargo area, bed, and roof carrier.

Enter the actual downward load carried by the tow vehicle—not total trailer weight.

How to check vehicle payload

  1. Use the exact vehicle’s labels. Find GVWR on the certification label and the combined occupant-and-cargo limit on the tire-and-loading label, commonly near the driver’s door.
  2. Choose one basis. Enter the door-label limit directly, or subtract a measured ready-to-load vehicle weight from GVWR. Do not mix a payload label with a curb weight from a different trim.
  3. Count everything added. Include the driver, every passenger, cargo, luggage, pets, roof or bed cargo, removable equipment, and trailer tongue or fifth-wheel pin weight.
  4. Review the margin. A positive result is remaining payload; a negative result is the amount by which the entered plan exceeds the selected limit.
  5. Weigh and verify. Check the fully loaded vehicle and individual axles on a suitable scale. Compare those measurements with GVWR, front and rear GAWR, tire, wheel, and hitch limits.

Payload formulas and assumptions

When you use the GVWR method, the calculator applies:

Payload capacity = GVWR − base vehicle weight

For either method:

Planned payload = occupants + cargo + added equipment + tongue/pin weight
Remaining payload = payload capacity − planned payload

With the GVWR method, estimated loaded vehicle weight is base vehicle weight plus planned payload. The base must represent the vehicle before the loads listed in the calculator are added; otherwise those items will be counted twice.

Vehicle payload FAQs

How is vehicle payload calculated?

A basic capacity is GVWR minus the vehicle’s weight before the listed loads are added. Planned payload is the total of occupants, cargo, added equipment, and trailer tongue or pin weight carried by the vehicle. Remaining payload is capacity minus planned payload.

Does the driver count as payload?

Yes. NHTSA treats the driver as an occupant for the vehicle-capacity placard. Include the driver and everyone else riding in the vehicle.

Should I use curb weight or a scale weight?

A current scale weight is usually more useful because trim, options, modifications, accessories, fluids, and carried equipment can make an individual vehicle differ from a published curb weight. Make sure the scale weight excludes any loads you enter separately.

Does trailer tongue weight count against payload?

Yes. The downward load placed on the tow vehicle by a conventional trailer tongue or fifth-wheel/gooseneck pin uses payload. Do not enter the trailer’s entire weight in that field. Also check hitch, GAWR, GCWR, trailer, and manufacturer towing limits separately.

Is payload capacity the same as towing capacity?

No. Payload is weight carried by the vehicle. Towing capacity addresses a trailer and depends on additional ratings and assumptions. Passengers and cargo can use enough payload that a vehicle cannot carry the tongue weight associated with its headline trailer rating.

Is staying below GVWR enough?

No. Total weight can be below GVWR while too much load is placed on one axle, tire, wheel, or hitch. This calculator cannot determine weight distribution, securement, stability, or towing suitability.

Are my weights stored or tracked?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser. This calculator does not upload, store, or attach input values to analytics events.

  • The result is arithmetic based on your inputs, not a weighing, inspection, loading plan, towing recommendation, engineering certification, or legal determination.
  • Published curb weights can describe a representative configuration rather than your specific vehicle. Factory options, body equipment, modifications, and installed accessories can reduce real payload.
  • The calculator does not model axle or corner distribution, tire and wheel ratings, hitch limits, load securement, center of gravity, braking, handling, stability, or GCWR.
  • Regulatory definitions and label formats vary by vehicle class and jurisdiction. Follow the labels, owner documentation, and rules applicable to the exact vehicle and use.
