Fuel range and stop formulas

The calculator converts capacity to liters, trip distance to kilometers, and economy to liters per 100 kilometers. It then excludes the reserve from usable fuel. Later legs assume that you refill to full at each stop.

first leg (km) = tank L × ((starting % − reserve %) ÷ 100) ÷ (L/100 km) × 100
repeat leg (km) = tank L × ((100% − reserve %) ÷ 100) ÷ (L/100 km) × 100
minimum stops = ceiling((trip distance − first-leg range) ÷ repeat-leg range)

The stop formula is used only when the trip exceeds the first-leg range. Unit conversion does not add a safety factor; the selected reserve is the explicit planning margin.

How to plan useful fuel stops

  1. Measure the complete trip. Include known diversions, side trips, and the return journey if needed.
  2. Use realistic economy. A recent fill-up result from similar roads is more useful than a best-case dashboard number.
  3. Protect a practical reserve. Increase it where stations are sparse, opening hours are uncertain, or conditions may worsen.
  4. Treat each distance as a ceiling. Select a real station before the listed point; the calculator does not know station locations or availability.
  5. Reassess while driving. Compare actual fuel level and distance with the plan and refuel sooner if consumption is higher than assumed.

Example: 850-mile trip with a 15-gallon tank

At 28 US MPG, a full 15-gallon tank has a theoretical range of 420 miles. Protecting a 15% reserve leaves 12.75 gallons for each planned leg, or 357 miles. Starting full, an 850-mile trip therefore needs two fuel stops under the refill-to-full assumption, with maximum stop thresholds near miles 357 and 714.

Those mileages are not suggested station locations. The driver should choose available stations before the thresholds and leave more margin if actual economy is uncertain.

How does the planner calculate the number of fuel stops?

It calculates how far the starting fuel can travel before the reserve, then divides any remaining trip distance into full-tank, reserve-protected legs. It rounds partial legs up because another refill is required.

Why can the first leg be shorter than later legs?

The first leg begins at the starting fuel percentage you enter. Every later leg assumes the tank is refilled to 100%, while the same reserve is protected.

Should I stop at the exact listed distance?

No. The listed distance is the latest mathematical threshold under constant fuel economy. Pick a known open station before it and allow extra distance for exits, detours, or missed stations.

Which MPG or consumption figure should I use?

Use a real-world figure from similar route, speed, temperature, load, and towing conditions when possible. If uncertain, enter a more conservative fuel economy or use a larger reserve.

Does the reserve match the dashboard low-fuel warning?

Not necessarily. The reserve here is a planning percentage of entered usable capacity. Dashboard gauges and warnings vary by vehicle and may not be linear or precise.

Does the tool find gas stations?

No. It calculates distance windows only and does not use location data. Check a current map or station operator for locations, fuel type, access, and opening status.

  • This is a simplified planning estimate, not live navigation, a fuel-gauge reading, roadside assistance, or a guarantee of range or station availability.
  • It assumes constant fuel economy, usable tank capacity, and a full refill at every planned stop.
  • It does not model traffic, idling, warm-up, wind, temperature, elevation, surface, speed, fuel quality, payload, towing, mechanical condition, detours, or gauge error.
  • The calculated stop count is the mathematical minimum under the inputs; convenient station placement may require more frequent stops.

Travel planning: never intentionally run a vehicle to the calculated threshold. Monitor the vehicle, obey warnings, confirm stations in advance, and keep additional fuel margin where safe access is limited.
