How to check a towing plan
- Identify the exact setup. Ratings can change with model year, engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab, wheelbase, drive layout, towing package, hitch type, and installed equipment.
- Use vehicle-specific ratings. Read the certification and tire-and-loading labels and the owner/towing documentation. Enter GCWR and a travel-ready pre-coupling scale weight together when available.
- Build the loaded trailer weight. Add cargo, options, fluids, batteries, propane and gear to the trailer’s actual empty weight. Compare the total with both trailer GVWR and the tow rating.
- Count vehicle payload. Add driver, passengers, vehicle cargo, accessories, hitch equipment and the trailer’s measured tongue weight. Tongue weight is carried by the tow vehicle.
- Verify the complete combination. Weigh the loaded vehicle, trailer, individual axles and tongue as directed by the manufacturers. Confirm tires, wheels, hitch parts, brakes, load distribution and local requirements.
Towing formulas and assumptions
Estimated tongue weight = loaded trailer × tongue percentage
Tow-vehicle payload used = occupants + vehicle cargo/equipment + tongue weight
GCWR trailer headroom = GCWR − tow vehicle weight before coupling
The calculator converts each applicable constraint into a maximum loaded trailer weight. Payload-based trailer capacity is remaining vehicle payload before tongue load divided by the entered tongue-weight fraction. Hitch-based capacity is hitch tongue limit divided by the same fraction. The displayed planning limit is the smallest entered result.

Conventional-trailer scope: The percentage model is for a conventional bumper-pull/receiver-hitch trailer. Fifth-wheel, gooseneck, weight-distributing and specialty combinations can have different assumptions and load-transfer behavior; use their exact documentation.
Towing capacity FAQs
How is loaded trailer weight calculated?
Add the trailer’s actual empty weight and everything loaded into or onto it: cargo, water, fuel, batteries, propane, options, accessories and gear. A brochure “dry weight” can omit equipment or fluids.
Does tongue weight count against payload?
Yes. Tongue weight carried by the tow vehicle uses payload, along with occupants, cargo, accessories and hitch equipment. A vehicle can run out of payload before reaching its published trailer rating.
What tongue-weight percentage should I use?
Many conventional-trailer instructions use 10–15% of loaded trailer weight, but that is not universal. Follow the ranges and procedures for the exact tow vehicle, trailer and hitch, load the trailer as directed, and measure actual tongue weight.
How does GCWR limit trailer weight?
This calculator subtracts the loaded tow vehicle’s weight before coupling from GCWR. The remainder is headroom for the complete loaded trailer. Do not use a vehicle weight that omits people, cargo, fuel or towing equipment.
Why can usable towing capacity be below the advertised rating?
Passengers, cargo, accessories and hitch equipment consume payload and combination capacity. The resulting tongue load can reach a payload, axle or hitch limit before the maximum trailer rating.
Does a within-limit result prove the setup is safe?
No. Arithmetic cannot verify axle or corner loads, tire and wheel ratings, receiver mode, hitch setup, coupler, brakes, frontal area, sway stability, cargo securement, road conditions, maintenance or legal requirements.
Are my towing weights stored or tracked?
No. This calculator runs in your browser and does not upload, store or attach input values to analytics events.
