Paint quantity formulas
First find the coat-area, then divide by the entered product coverage and add the allowance:
rated quantity = coat-area ÷ coverage
quantity with allowance = rated quantity × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
When coverage is rated per ready-to-spray mixture, the allowance-adjusted quantity is split by the total ratio parts. For a 4:1:1 ratio, coating is 4/6, activator is 1/6 and reducer is 1/6 of the mixed volume.
When coverage is rated per unmixed coating, the allowance-adjusted quantity is the coating component. The calculator then adds activator and reducer in proportion to the coating parts. Package rounding applies only to the displayed coating purchase plan, not to the mixing formula.
Panel areas, coverage and assumptions
- Panel presets: approximate outer painted faces for a generic passenger car. They are editable starting points, not OEM dimensions. Large trucks, vans, SUVs and compact cars can differ substantially.
- Coverage: use the theoretical or practical coverage value from the exact product documentation, with the correct dry-film thickness and ready-to-spray basis. Do not assume every coating covers 400 ft²/US gal.
- Allowance: accounts for spray transfer and routine losses only to the extent you enter. Gun type, painter technique, masking, booth airflow, panel shape, metallic orientation coats, color hiding and rework can change actual use.
- Separate calculations: primer, sealer, base color, midcoat and clearcoat should each be calculated with their own coats, coverage and ratio.
Unit handling: switching units converts the current areas, coverage and package increment. It does not merely relabel them. One US gallon equals 3.785411784 litres; one square foot equals 0.09290304 square metres.
How to plan a refinishing quantity
- Choose one coating. Work separately for primer, basecoat, clearcoat and any other layer.
- Read its technical data sheet. Record coverage, whether that coverage is ready-to-spray, coat count, film thickness and mix ratio.
- Define the job area. Select panels and edit their sizes, or enter a measured area. Include jambs, panel edges and blend zones only when they receive that coating.
- Set a realistic allowance. Base it on the spray system, painter experience, job complexity and supplier guidance.
- Check package sizes. Use the unrounded component volumes for ratio planning, and check the rounded coating purchase amount against tinting minimums and available cans.

How much paint does it take to paint a whole car?
There is no dependable car-wide constant. A full exterior can vary with vehicle size, panel areas, excluded jambs or undersides, product coverage, number of coats, color hiding, spray transfer and rework. Start with the editable full-exterior preset, replace its panel sizes where possible and use the coating's technical data sheet.
Should primer, basecoat and clearcoat be added together?
Do not use one combined coverage calculation. Run the calculator once for each product because coverage, mix ratio, film thickness and required coat count can differ.
What is ready-to-spray coverage?
It means the coverage value applies after the coating is mixed with required activator, reducer or other components. When documentation gives coverage for the unmixed coating component instead, select that basis so the added components do not incorrectly reduce the coating quantity.
Are the built-in panel areas exact?
No. They are generic planning estimates for outer faces. Curvature, body style, repair boundaries, jambs, edges, undersides and masking vary. Edit the values or use a measured-area estimate for better planning.
Does package rounding preserve the mix ratio?
The purchase plan rounds only the coating component up to the selected can increment. Always measure the actual amount mixed according to the product ratio; buying a larger can does not mean all of it should be activated at once.
Are my values tracked?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser and does not upload, store or attach inputs to analytics events.
Limits and refinishing-safety disclaimer
- This is a purchasing and mixture-volume estimate, not an application specification, color formula, VOC calculation, hazardous-material assessment or guarantee of coverage.
- The calculator does not account automatically for substrate absorption, sanding breakthrough, repairs, color value, transparency, effect-pigment orientation, flash time, pot life, booth conditions, gun setup or local environmental rules.
- Only the coating manufacturer, vehicle refinishing information, supplier and a qualified refinisher can determine product compatibility and the required coating system.
Safety disclaimer: Read every label and safety data sheet before opening or mixing material. Automotive refinishing can expose people to flammable vapours, toxic mists and isocyanates that may cause severe respiratory and skin sensitization.
