Car depreciation formulas

Declining-balance models apply a percentage to the value remaining at the start of each year:

value after t years = starting value × (1 − annual rate)t

With separate rates, year 1 uses the first-year rate; each later year uses the later rate:

value after t years = start × (1 − first-year rate) × (1 − later rate)t − 1

Straight-line mode subtracts the same amount each year:

value after t years = starting value − (annual amount × t)

If a minimum floor is entered, the calculator returns the greater of the formula result and the floor value. Rates are applied once per complete year; partial years and monthly timing are not modeled.

How to build a useful estimate

  1. Choose the right starting value. For a new purchase, use the amount that represents the vehicle itself consistently. For a vehicle you already own, start with a current market-value estimate rather than its old purchase price.
  2. Set the horizon. Project the number of complete years until a possible sale, trade-in, lease comparison, or ownership-cost checkpoint.
  3. Enter an evidence-based rate. Use vehicle-specific resale forecasts, recent comparable values, or a range of scenarios. The loaded values are examples, not market averages.
  4. Use the floor carefully. A floor can prevent implausibly low long-range results, but it is still only an assumption.
  5. Stress-test the result. Recalculate with lower and higher rates. Depreciation uncertainty can materially change a total ownership-cost comparison.

Why actual vehicle value may differ

A formula cannot identify a market price. Vehicle-specific valuation services consider details such as age, exact trim, mileage, equipment, condition, location, and whether the transaction is a dealer trade-in, private-party sale, or retail purchase. Market supply, demand, incentives, fuel prices, repair history, title status, and model reputation can also change the result.

Used-car shortcut: if the vehicle already has several years of depreciation behind it, enter today’s estimated market value as the starting value and project forward. Do not restart the schedule from the original new-car price unless you are analyzing the full history.

How is car depreciation calculated?

A declining-balance estimate multiplies the prior year’s value by one minus the annual depreciation rate. A straight-line estimate subtracts the same amount every year. Both methods are simplified scenarios, not appraisals.

Is the rate applied to the original price every year?

Not in either percentage model. Each percentage is applied to the value at the beginning of that year, so the annual dollar loss normally declines. Straight-line mode is the option that subtracts the same dollar amount each year.

What rate should I use?

Use a rate supported by a current, vehicle-specific residual forecast or by comparable values for the same model, trim, age, mileage, condition, and market. Try multiple rates when the future is uncertain. The example inputs are deliberately labeled assumptions and are not a promise or market average.

Does this show trade-in or private-party value?

No. Those are different transaction contexts and can produce different values. Use a valuation source that matches the exact vehicle, location, condition, mileage, equipment, and intended transaction.

Can I use the schedule for taxes or accounting?

No. Market-value decline and tax or book depreciation are different concepts. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction, eligibility, business use, basis, recovery method, conventions, limits, and current law. Consult the applicable rules or a qualified professional.

What does the minimum value floor do?

It prevents the formula from returning less than the selected percentage of the starting value. It does not guarantee a salvage, trade-in, insurance, or sale value.

Are my inputs stored or tracked?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser. This tool does not upload, store, or attach input values to analytics events.
