How to use the voice-over length calculator
- Add the script length. Paste the script to count its words locally, or choose Enter word count when you already know the total.
- Set the speaking rate. Use a timed read from the performer when possible. The preset buttons are starting points for planning, not fixed voice-over standards.
- Describe the session. Enter planned full takes, a pickup or retake allowance, and fixed minutes for setup, direction, breaks, or other known overhead.
- Check the results. Finished length is the expected deliverable runtime. Raw recorded material and total studio session are planning estimates, not post-production estimates.
- Compare with a target. If a spot, video, or narration has a fixed runtime, enter it to see the whole-word budget and an approximate number of words to cut or add.
Voice-over length and recording-time formulas
Let W be the word count, P the speaking rate in words per minute, T the number of full takes, R the pickup/retake percentage, and F the fixed session minutes:
finished seconds = (W ÷ P) × 60
raw recorded seconds = finished seconds × T × (1 + R ÷ 100)
session seconds = raw recorded seconds + (F × 60)
When a target finished duration is supplied, the calculator estimates the largest whole-word budget at the selected pace:
target words = floor(target seconds × P ÷ 60)
The pickup percentage is applied to the combined duration of all full takes. For example, two full takes with 15% pickups produce a recording-to-finished ratio of 2.3× before fixed session time. Fixed time is added only to the session estimate.
These are planning estimates. Natural pauses, difficult names, performance direction, pronunciation changes, false starts, room interruptions, and script revisions can change booth time. The calculation does not include selecting takes, comping, editing, de-noising, processing, quality control, rendering, client review, revisions, or delivery.
The script counter treats each whitespace-separated token containing at least one Unicode letter or number as one word. Contractions and hyphenated terms without spaces each count as one word. Punctuation does not directly add time; use a measured WPM that reflects the actual delivery.

Voice-over length FAQ
How do I calculate voice-over length from word count?
Divide the word count by the speaking rate in words per minute. Multiply by 60 to express the estimated finished read in seconds. For example, 300 words at 150 WPM is about 2 minutes.
What speaking rate should I use for a voice-over?
Record and time a representative sample from the actual performer and script when possible. Delivery style, emphasis, pauses, pronunciation, and sentence complexity all affect the effective rate, so a preset should be treated as a starting point.
How is recording time different from finished length?
Finished length estimates the selected final read. Recording time can contain multiple full takes plus pickups and retakes. Total session time also includes the fixed minutes entered for setup, direction, breaks, or other known overhead.
Does the recording estimate include editing?
No. It excludes take selection, comping, cleanup, processing, mastering, rendering, review, revisions, and delivery. Add those separately to a production schedule.
How many words fit in a target voice-over duration?
Multiply target minutes by the selected WPM, then round down to a whole word. The calculator also shows whether the current script is over or under that planning budget.
Does punctuation affect the estimate?
Not directly. Punctuation influences how a performer pauses and phrases the read, so its effect should be reflected in the measured speaking rate. Rehearse the actual script for the best estimate.
Is my voice-over script uploaded or stored?
No. Word counting, calculation, copying, and report creation run locally in the browser. The script is not sent to a backend.
