Before continuing: rewriting a PDF can invalidate existing digital signatures. Metadata removal does not remove visible or hidden page text, comments, form data, attachments or filenames.
4. Download and verify
Your verified cleaned PDF will appear here.
Cleaned PDF ready
The rewritten file passed the tool’s Info dictionary and XMP reference checks.
How to remove PDF metadata
What this PDF metadata cleaner removes
PDF document properties can be stored in an Info dictionary and in XML-based XMP metadata. The Info dictionary supports standard fields and arbitrary custom properties. This tool removes the active Info dictionary and every XMP metadata stream referenced through a PDF object’s Metadata entry, then reloads the output to confirm those references are gone.
- Removed
Author, title, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, custom Info properties, and referenced XMP packets. - Not removed
Page text and images, annotations, comments, forms, layers, bookmarks, attachments, embedded file names, links, scripts, and your device’s file-system metadata.
Visible content is preserved
The tool does not intentionally rasterize, recompress or edit pages. The PDF container is rewritten, so internal object order and total file size may change.
Metadata is not redaction
A person’s name can still appear on a page, in a comment, form field, attachment or filename. Use a proper PDF redaction tool for sensitive page content.
Encrypted PDFs
This browser library cannot safely rewrite a protected PDF. If authorized, first create an unencrypted copy with the PDF unlocker.
Browser memory limits
The input limit is 100 MB. Loading, rewriting and verification need additional memory, so a large PDF may still fail on a phone or low-memory device.
Technical basis: Adobe documents the PDF Info dictionary’s standard and arbitrary string properties as well as XMP metadata streams. The bundled pdf-lib PDFDocument API reads and rewrites the file locally. For background, see Adobe’s Document Info dictionary reference and metadata and XMP overview.
Privacy limit: this is not a forensic sanitizer and does not guarantee that no recoverable information remains. For high-risk releases, use a specialist sanitization workflow, inspect the final document in another trusted application, and follow your organization’s handling rules.
PDF metadata remover FAQ
Which PDF metadata does this tool remove?
It removes the active PDF Info dictionary, including standard fields such as author, title, subject, keywords, creator, producer and dates plus custom properties. It also removes XMP metadata packets referenced by PDF objects.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The selected PDF is read and rewritten in browser memory. It is not sent to Starlight Tools. The page still loads ordinary site resources, analytics and advertising subject to consent choices, but the selected file and its property values are not included in those requests.
Does removing metadata change the visible pages?
The tool does not intentionally rasterize, edit or recompress visible page content. It does rewrite the PDF container, so file size and internal object layout can change. Keep the original until you verify the output.
Will digital signatures remain valid?
No guarantee should be made. Rewriting a digitally signed PDF normally invalidates its existing signatures. Verify signatures in a trusted PDF reader and retain the signed original.
Can it remove metadata from a password-protected PDF?
No. Remove the password first with an authorized PDF unlocker, then load the unencrypted copy into this tool.
Does this remove hidden text, comments or attachments?
No. Metadata removal is not redaction. Page text, annotations, comments, form data, layers, attachments, filenames and other document content may remain.
Is the output guaranteed to contain no recoverable information?
No. The tool verifies that the output has no active Info dictionary or referenced XMP metadata packet, but it is not a forensic sanitizer. Sensitive content can remain elsewhere in the file or in external copies, backups and file-system metadata.
What is the PDF file-size limit?
The tool accepts one PDF up to 100 MB. Practical limits can be lower on phones and low-memory devices because reading, rewriting and verifying the file requires additional browser memory.
How this tool is checked
Implementation last verified: 28 July 2026. Core engine checks cover an empty-metadata PDF and a synthetic PDF containing standard Info fields, a custom Info key and an XMP stream. During normal use, each cleaned output is loaded again with metadata updates disabled, then checked for an active Info dictionary, referenced XMP streams and an unchanged page count before a download is offered.
Known limits: malformed or unsupported PDFs may fail to load; rewritten PDFs can change size and invalidate signatures; this check does not inspect every possible content-bearing object for personal information or prove that deleted bytes are absent from every historical revision or external copy.
