Anchor rode and scope formula

Scope compares the complete rode paid out—including chain and rope—with the vertical distance from the seabed to the bow attachment point:

Vertical distance = water depth + expected rise + bow height

Total rode = vertical distance × scope ratio

For 26 ft of maximum vertical distance at 7:1 scope, the calculated total rode is 182 ft.

Depth, tide, and bow height

Do not multiply water depth alone when the bow fitting is above the surface. If water may rise while the boat is anchored, also calculate at the greatest expected level.

Keep references consistent: If depth comes from a chart datum, enter the maximum tide height above that datum. If it is a current sounder reading, enter only the additional rise expected after the reading.

How chain is handled

Anchor rode includes both chain and rope. The calculator applies available chain first and reports how much additional rope is required to reach the selected total rode.

It does not recommend chain length or diameter. Anchor type and size, vessel displacement, windage, fittings, seabed, chafe, shock loads, corrosion, and windlass compatibility all affect ground-tackle selection.

Swing-clearance estimate

The horizontal anchor-to-bow reach uses a straight, taut-line triangle:

Horizontal reach ≈ √(rode² − vertical distance²)

Adding boat length estimates an anchor-to-stern radius. Real rode forms a catenary, the vessel yaws and sheers, the anchor may move, and nearby boats may swing differently, so this is not a safe-clearance guarantee.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the depth at the intended anchor position using a known water-level reference.
  2. Add the greatest expected rise in tide or water level and the bow attachment height above the water.

Example anchor rode calculation

A boat anchors in 20 ft of water. The water may rise 3 ft, and the bow roller is 3 ft above the surface. The maximum vertical distance is therefore 26 ft. At a selected 7:1 scope:

(20 + 3 + 3) × 7 = 182 ft total rode

With 30 ft of chain, the calculated split is 30 ft of chain plus 152 ft of rope. If 200 ft of total rode is available, 18 ft remains after paying out the target length. The actual choice of scope and ground tackle still requires condition-specific judgment.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is anchor scope?

Scope is total rode paid out divided by the vertical distance from the seabed at the anchor to the boat's rode attachment point. A 7:1 scope means seven units of rode for each one unit of vertical distance.

Should I include tide and bow height?

Yes. Add the bow roller, chock, or cleat height above the water, and plan for the maximum expected water level while anchored. Omitting either produces less scope than the number suggests.

Does the chain count in total rode?

Yes. Rode is the full connection from boat to anchor. If the calculation calls for 182 ft total and 30 ft is chain, the remaining 152 ft can be rope.

Which scope ratio should I select?

Use a ratio supported by the vessel and anchor manufacturer, local guidance, and the expected tide, weather, current, seabed, and available room. Government examples vary: U.S. Coast Guard recreational guidance gives a general five-to-seven-times rule, while Transport Canada illustrates 3:1, 5:1, and 7:1 for increasingly demanding conditions. These are references, not guarantees.

Is more scope always better?

More scope generally makes the pull on an anchor more horizontal, but space, hazards, depth changes, other boats, local restrictions, and the complete ground tackle must be considered. Never pay out rode without confirming adequate swing room and secure attachment.

How accurate is the swing radius?

It is a geometric approximation using a taut, straight rode and optional boat length. Real chain and rope sag, stretch, lift, and move; boats yaw and sheer; wind and current change; and another boat may use a different scope. Maintain substantially more clearance than a simple calculated boundary.

  • The calculator does not assess holding ground, anchor setting, dragging, wind or wave loads, current, fetch, shelter, anchor type, or vessel windage.
  • It does not size or inspect the anchor, chain, rope, shackles, swivel, windlass, bow roller, cleats, snubber, bridle, or attachment points.
  • Depth can change across the swing circle. Verify charted hazards, under-keel clearance, tide, shoreline, restricted areas, cables, pipelines, and room for every plausible wind and current direction.
  • The straight-line clearance geometry is not a catenary or dynamic-load model and does not establish a safe separation distance.
