Formula and assumptions

Courses = ceiling((target height − optional top-stud height) ÷ course height)

The result rounds upward because a build uses whole vertical courses. Total physical pieces are:

Total pieces = courses × pieces per layer

The calculator uses nominal stacked geometry: 9.6 mm per standard brick course, 3.2 mm per plate course, and an optional 1.6 mm exposed stud allowance at the very top. The stud allowance is subtracted before the course count is rounded, then added back once to the achieved physical height.

Important: this is a height and piece-count calculation, not a structural design tool. A tall one-brick stack can topple long before the mathematical target. Use a broad, interlocked base and sensible support for real builds; do not build where falling pieces could injure someone or damage property.

The nominal dimensions come from the LDraw File Format Specification: one brick is 24 LDraw units (LDU) high, one plate is 8 LDU, one stud is 4 LDU, and 1 LDU is approximately 0.4 mm. That converts to 9.6 mm, 3.2 mm, and 1.6 mm respectively. LEGO Education also documents the core building ratio that three plates equal one brick.

LDraw describes its real-world metric conversions as approximations. Manufacturing tolerances, wear, compression, warped parts, baseplates, nonstandard elements, and how you measure the top surface can cause a real tower to differ slightly. For a precision build, measure your actual pieces and use the custom course option.

Using the nominal 9.6 mm stacked course height and ignoring exposed studs at the very top, 105 standard brick courses reach 1.008 m. A one-brick-wide stack therefore uses 105 bricks.

How many LEGO bricks make a 1 foot tower?

Using 9.6 mm per standard brick course and excluding exposed top studs, 32 courses reach 307.2 mm, which is about 1.008 feet.

Why does the calculator round up?

You cannot normally use a fraction of a brick or plate as a vertical course. The calculator rounds up to the next whole course so the tower reaches or exceeds the target.

Are three LEGO plates the same height as one brick?

Yes in the standard building geometry: three plate courses equal one standard brick course. The calculator uses nominal course heights of 3.2 mm per plate and 9.6 mm per brick.

Does the top stud count toward tower height?

The default course calculation excludes the final exposed studs. Enable the top-stud option to add a nominal 1.6 mm to the tower's highest point. This does not add another brick.

Does a wider tower need more bricks?

Yes. The number of vertical courses stays the same, but total pieces equal courses multiplied by the bricks or plates used in each layer. Set that layer count in the calculator.
