Formula: footsteps around Earth

Convert the route and step length to the same unit, then divide. The calculator uses metres internally:

steps = route distance (m) ÷ step length (m) default = 40,075,016.686 m ÷ 0.75 m default = 53,433,355.58… → 53,433,356 whole steps

The final count is rounded up because a fraction of a last step would not finish the route.

Step length versus stride length

A step and a stride are not the same measurement. Step length runs from one foot's contact point to the other foot's next contact point. Stride length runs from one foot to that same foot's next contact and normally contains two steps.

  1. Walk naturally for at least 10 steps.
  2. Measure the total distance from the first contact to the last.
  3. Divide by the number of steps taken.
  4. Repeat and average the measurements if you want a steadier result.
