How to convert Word to PDF
- Choose a DOCX file. Select the file or drop it onto the upload area. The converter validates the Word package before opening it.
- Review the preview. Check page count, text flow, tables, images, headers, footers, fonts, and page breaks.
- Save the PDF. Choose Save as PDF, select a PDF destination in the browser print dialog, verify paper size and backgrounds, then save.
What the DOCX converter supports
Document structure
Paragraphs, headings, lists, tables, columns, page sections, links, headers, footers, footnotes, and endnotes are rendered where the DOCX structure allows it.
Images and fonts
Embedded images and embedded fonts can be included. Fonts unavailable in the file or on your device may fall back to a similar browser font.
Searchable output
Browser printing preserves ordinary content as text rather than flattening the whole page into an image, so it is normally searchable and selectable.
Accuracy and limitations
| Content | Expected result | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Text, headings, lists, and simple tables | Usually close to the DOCX layout | Line wrapping, substituted fonts, and table width |
| Headers, footers, embedded images, footnotes | Supported in common documents | Image crop, page association, and print backgrounds |
| Charts, SmartArt, equations, fields, text boxes | May be simplified, moved, or omitted | Compare every affected page with Word |
| Automatic pagination | Can differ because a browser is not the Microsoft Word layout engine | Page endings, widows/orphans, and section changes |
This converter is best for convenient, private conversion of ordinary DOCX files. For a contract, filing, accessibility master, print-ready artwork, or any document where exact pagination is critical, export from the application that created the file and compare the final PDF page by page.
Troubleshooting
- Old .doc file: save it as
.docxin Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, or another compatible editor first. - Password protection: encrypted documents cannot be opened. Remove the password in a trusted editor and convert an unprotected copy.
- Missing or different fonts: embed permitted fonts in the DOCX or install the required fonts on your device. Browser and font licensing rules affect embedding in the PDF.
- Blank graphics: convert unsupported charts, SmartArt, or drawing objects to ordinary images in Word before saving the DOCX.
- Wrong page size: select the matching paper size and 100% scale in the print dialog. Disable browser-added headers and footers; enable background graphics when the document uses shaded areas.
- Large file: remove unused high-resolution images or compress pictures in Word. The limit is 25 MiB compressed, 5,000 package entries, and 150 MiB of declared uncompressed content.
- Library unavailable: the DOCX renderer is loaded from jsDelivr. A content blocker, firewall, or offline connection can prevent the converter from starting.
Word to PDF converter FAQ
Is my Word document uploaded?
No. The DOCX file is read and rendered in your browser. Starlight Tools does not receive, store, or track the file name or document content.
Does the converter support old .doc files?
No. It supports the modern Office Open XML .docx format. Open an old .doc file in Word, LibreOffice, or another compatible editor and save it as .docx first.
Will the PDF look exactly like Microsoft Word?
Not always. The converter maps DOCX content to browser HTML, so uncommon fonts, complex fields, SmartArt, charts, equations, text boxes, and automatic page breaks can differ from Word. Review every page before saving.
Will PDF text remain searchable and selectable?
Usually yes. The tool uses the browser print engine instead of turning pages into screenshots, so ordinary text remains searchable and selectable.
Can it convert password-protected DOCX files?
No. Remove the password in a trusted document editor, save a new unprotected DOCX, and convert that copy.
Why does Save as PDF open a print dialog?
Browsers provide PDF creation through their print dialog. Choose Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF, verify the paper size, enable background graphics when needed, and save.
What is the file-size limit?
The compressed DOCX limit is 25 MiB, with additional package limits to protect browser memory. Large documents with many high-resolution images may still exceed the available memory on a phone or older computer.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
The upload and preview are responsive, but the final PDF workflow depends on the mobile browser and operating system. Very large documents work best on a desktop computer.
