How to make a random seating chart
Add names. Paste one guest, student, attendee, or team member per line.
Choose a layout. Balance people across tables or assign each person a numbered row and seat.
Check capacity. Set enough places for everyone. The live totals show available and open seats.
Generate and review. Randomize the chart, make any necessary accommodations, then copy, download, or print it.
How the assignment works
Balanced tables
People are shuffled, the table deal order is shuffled, and people are distributed round-robin. Occupied table sizes therefore differ by at most one person.
Numbered seats
Every available row-and-seat position is shuffled, then each person receives one distinct position. Empty positions stay visible in the chart.
Randomness and seeds
Without a seed, the tool uses the browser’s cryptographic random source when available. A seed uses a deterministic pseudorandom generator so the same input and settings can be repeated.
Important review
Random placement cannot account for accessibility, health, hearing, vision, supervision, social, or safeguarding requirements. Always review the chart before using it.
Random seating chart FAQ
How are people assigned to tables?
The tool shuffles the people, randomizes the order in which tables receive people, and deals people around the tables. Provided the capacity is sufficient, occupied table sizes differ by no more than one person.
Can I assign people to exact numbered seats?
Yes. Choose Numbered seats and set the row and seat counts. Each person receives a unique label such as Row B, Seat 3.
Can I reproduce the same seating chart?
Yes. Enter the same seed and keep the names, their order, layout dimensions, and duplicate-name setting unchanged.
What happens when two people have the same name?
Every non-empty line is treated as a separate person. Keep Number repeated names selected to display identical entries as Alex (1), Alex (2), and so on.
Are the names uploaded or saved?
No. The list and assignments remain in this browser tab. Copying, downloading, or printing happens only when you choose the corresponding control.
Can I use this for accessibility or safeguarding plans?
Use the random chart only as a starting point. Review and adjust it for mobility, vision, hearing, medical, supervision, social, safeguarding, and emergency-access needs.
