Formula and assumptions
For a kernel-volume input, the calculator uses:
Popped volume = kernel volume × expansion factor × (expected yield ÷ 100)
For a target volume, it rearranges the formula:
Kernel volume = target popped volume ÷ expansion factor ÷ (expected yield ÷ 100)
Weight conversions use the same kitchen guide equivalence: 1 ounce of kernels = ⅛ US cup of kernels. That makes weight a convenient estimate, not a density measurement for every variety.
Container note: bowls, cinema buckets and bathtubs are not standard units. Their starting sizes—8 cups, 20 cups and 150 litres—are playful, editable comparisons. Popcorn also settles and packs differently, so a real container may hold more or less.
