Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) Calculator by Country

Compare what an amount or salary could buy in another country using matched national purchasing-power data. Choose two countries to get a household-consumption PPP estimate—not a bank exchange rate or a promise of equivalent living costs.

The former “Price Indices + FX” mode was removed: current CPI levels with base 100 are not automatically comparable across countries. A valid relative-PPP projection needs a base-period exchange rate and price-index changes over time.

This is a statistical purchasing-power equivalent. It is not spendable currency, a market exchange-rate conversion, or a prediction. No market-rate result is shown because the page does not bundle a same-date authoritative FX snapshot.

How to interpret the result

The converter first expresses the source amount in international dollars, then applies the target country’s factor. The result estimates the target local-currency amount associated with the same national-average household purchasing power in the 2024 data.

The percentage shown is the change in the numeric local-currency amount implied by the factor ratio. Because a rupee, pound, dollar, and yen are different units, it is not a standalone percentage cost-of-living gap. A valid price-level percentage comparison also needs compatible exchange-rate data.

Worked salary examples using the 2024 dataset

US salary to India

Inputs: US$100,000; US factor 1.00; India factor 19.90.

100,000 × (19.90 ÷ 1.00) = ₹1,990,000

A US$100,000 household-consumption amount has a national PPP equivalent of about ₹1.99 million in India. This does not mean the salaries, taxes, or lifestyles are interchangeable.

UK salary to the United States

Inputs: £50,000; UK factor 0.68; US factor 1.00.

50,000 × (1.00 ÷ 0.68) = US$73,529.41

On this national household-consumption measure, £50,000 in the UK corresponds to about US$73,529 in the United States.

US salary to Canada

Inputs: US$80,000; US factor 1.00; Canada factor 1.24.

80,000 × (1.24 ÷ 1.00) = C$99,200

The comparable national purchasing-power amount is about C$99,200, before considering taxes, benefits, or local housing.

Formula, methodology, and data

Target amount = Source amount × (Target PPP factor ÷ Source PPP factor)

The default uses the World Bank World Development Indicators’ PPP conversion factor for household final consumption expenditure (PA.NUS.PRVT.PP), measured in local currency units per international dollar. That expenditure-specific factor is a better match for salaries and household budgets than the economy-wide GDP factor (PA.NUS.PPP).

  • Version: embedded WDI 2024-observation snapshot, retrieved 27 February 2026; values are not fetched live.
  • Coverage: the countries listed in the converter. Countries without a verified matched-year observation are omitted. Advanced GDP coverage is smaller and missing selections produce an explicit error.
  • Programme: the World Bank International Comparison Program (ICP), with Eurostat and OECD PPP programmes for participating economies.
  • Benchmark and estimates: 2021 is the latest global ICP benchmark in this series. The World Bank extrapolates the 2021 benchmark to later years using relative inflation; Eurostat-OECD programme values can be updated through their own annual process. Some non-participating economies may be imputed.
  • Shared currencies: countries that use the same currency can still have different PPP factors because their national price levels differ. The selector therefore uses country observations, not one factor per currency.
  • Rounding: full-precision JavaScript numbers are used in calculations; only displayed values are rounded with locale-aware formatting.

Limitations

PPP is a broad national statistical comparison, not a personal cost-of-living calculator. It does not calculate income tax, take-home pay, visas, employer benefits, savings goals, household size, imported-goods preferences, or the prices you personally face.

Housing, healthcare, education, and other consumption categories contribute to the underlying national basket, but this result cannot represent a particular rent, insurance policy, school, city, or access to public services. For relocation or negotiation, combine it with current city-level housing, tax, benefits, and compensation evidence.

PPP salary converter FAQ

What salary has the same purchasing power abroad?

Enter the salary, choose its country, and choose the destination. The result estimates the destination-country amount with comparable national-average household purchasing power using matched 2024 factors; it is not a take-home-pay or job-market recommendation.

How is the PPP salary formula calculated?

The tool divides the source amount by the source country's local-currency-units-per-international-dollar factor, then multiplies by the target factor: target amount = source amount × (target factor ÷ source factor). Calculations retain full precision and round only the displayed result.

Why does PPP differ from the exchange rate?

A market exchange rate is the price at which currencies trade and is affected by financial flows, policy, and risk. PPP factors compare the prices of a broad basket of goods and services. A PPP result is therefore a purchasing-power comparison, not spendable foreign currency or an exchange-rate forecast.

Which World Bank factor does this calculator use?

The default is World Bank indicator PA.NUS.PRVT.PP, the PPP conversion factor for household final consumption expenditure in local currency units per international dollar. The advanced GDP option uses PA.NUS.PPP only for macroeconomic values and only where this snapshot contains both countries.

What does an international dollar mean?

An international dollar is a statistical comparison unit. In the reference framework it represents the amount of goods and services that one US dollar would buy in the United States; it is not a currency that can be held or exchanged.

How current is the data?

All built-in comparisons use 2024 observations from the World Bank World Development Indicators snapshot retrieved on 27 February 2026. The year appears with every result. Later annual values are generally extrapolations from the 2021 ICP benchmark, while Eurostat-OECD economies may be updated through their programmes.

Is PPP accurate for relocation or salary negotiation?

PPP is a useful national-average starting point, not a precise relocation budget or salary recommendation. Use it with local housing, tax, benefits, healthcare, household-size, and city-level research.

Does PPP include rent, taxes, healthcare, or city differences?

The household-consumption basket includes housing and health-related consumption in its national price comparison, but this tool does not model your rent, taxes, public-service eligibility, employer benefits, personal spending mix, or differences between cities.

Can two different data years be compared?

They should not be compared directly in this calculator. Inflation and methodology changes can create a false gap, so the built-in converter uses the same 2024 observation year for both countries. Custom factors should also come from the same indicator and year.
