How to do a useful household waste audit

  1. Choose normal days.
    Avoid holidays, house moves or parties unless that event is what you want to measure.
  2. Collect by stream.
    Keep disposal, recycling, compost and reuse items identifiable for the audit period.
  3. Sort and weigh.
    Use safe, consistent categories and subtract each empty container’s weight.
  4. Check local routes.
    Set capture targets only for services that accept the material in its actual condition.

Safety limit: Do not open bags or manually sort sharps, medicines, chemicals, sanitary waste, batteries, broken glass, medical waste or unknown materials. Keep children and pets away, use appropriate protective equipment, and follow local handling and disposal instructions. A records-based audit is safer when contents are uncertain.

“Diversion” here means generated material routed to accepted recycling, composting, reuse/donation or a verified specialist program instead of disposal. Prevention is shown separately because EPA defines source reduction as occurring before material enters the waste stream. The managed-away rate combines both effects for planning, but it is not labeled a diversion rate.

The annual projection assumes the audit period is representative. It does not correct for holidays, seasonal garden waste, occasional purchases, moisture changes, incomplete capture, collection frequency or changes in household occupancy. Repeat the audit in another season when those factors matter.

Preferred order of action

EPA’s non-hazardous waste hierarchy generally places source reduction and reuse first, followed by recycling and composting, then energy recovery, treatment and disposal. The hierarchy is guidance rather than a claim that every route is suitable for every material. Food, batteries, electronics, textiles and packaging each need locally appropriate handling.

How long should a household waste audit last?

Seven days is a practical starting point because it captures a normal weekly cycle. Longer or repeated audits can better represent irregular purchases, seasonal yard waste and collection schedules. Avoid unusual weeks if you want a typical baseline.

What is a household waste diversion rate?

In this calculator, diversion rate is accepted recycling, composting and reuse divided by total generated waste, expressed as a percentage. Source reduction is reported separately because prevented material never enters the measured waste stream.

Does recycling contamination count as diverted waste?

Only material that is accepted and actually routed to recycling, composting or reuse should be entered as diverted. Put rejected or known contaminated material in the disposal column.

How does the planner calculate annual waste?

It multiplies the audit weight by 365 divided by the number of audit days. This assumes the audit period is representative of the year, so seasonal or unusual weeks should be interpreted cautiously.

Why is prevention separate from diversion?

Prevention reduces waste before it is generated, while diversion routes generated material away from disposal. Showing both prevents a prevention goal from being mislabeled as recycling or composting.

Can I use volume instead of weight?

No. Materials have very different densities, so this calculator uses weight for consistent totals and percentages. Weigh each category after subtracting, or taring, the empty container.

Does the planner know what my local recycling service accepts?

No. Collection rules vary by location and provider. Choose only a route that is confirmed locally, and use disposal when no verified reuse, recycling, composting or specialist route exists.

Are hazardous or sanitary wastes included?

The weight can be recorded under Other, but do not open, sort or handle sharps, chemicals, medicines, sanitary waste, batteries or unknown hazardous items. Follow local authority and provider instructions for safe handling and disposal.
