How the faucet aerator savings calculation works

- Bathroom presets: EPA WaterSense bathroom faucet guidance states that labeled private bathroom sink faucets and accessories use no more than 1.5 gpm and reduce flow by at least 30% from the standard 2.2 gpm. WaterSense products are independently certified for efficiency and performance.
- Default running time: EPA's WaterSense calculator methodology assumes about 0.6 gallon saved per person per day for a labeled faucet or aerator retrofit. A 2.2-to-1.5 gpm comparison reaches that value at about 0.86 flow-affected minute per person per day. Edit this field for your routine.
- Product scope: EPA currently limits its faucet label to private bathroom and bar sink faucets and accessories; it does not label kitchen faucets. The kitchen option here is an editable comparison scenario, not a WaterSense claim. EPA notes that public lavatory faucets of 0.5 gpm or less are efficient but that such low rates are not appropriate for private bathrooms.
- Other replacement presets: 1.2 and 1.0 gpm are comparison scenarios, not automatic certification claims. Check the product label and specification for its exact rated flow and intended application.
- Cost scope: only the variable rate entered is applied. Fixed charges, minimum bills, tiers, taxes, financing, energy, maintenance, and future rate changes are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
How much water can a faucet aerator save?
It depends on the old and new flow rates and how long the tap runs for flow-dependent tasks. Reducing flow from 2.2 to 1.5 gpm saves 0.7 gallon for each unchanged running minute. EPA uses about 0.6 gallon per person per day as a broad WaterSense retrofit assumption.
What does 1.5 gpm mean?
It means 1.5 US gallons per minute, equal to about 5.68 litres per minute. EPA's current WaterSense specification caps labeled private bathroom sink faucets and aerators at this rate under the specified test pressure.
How do I measure my faucet's actual flow?
Run the faucet at your normal setting, collect a known volume, and time it. For example, collecting 4 US cups means collecting one-quarter gallon. The tool divides that volume by the elapsed seconds and multiplies by 60 to find a per-minute rate.
Should I count all time that the faucet runs?
Count time-based uses where lower flow can reduce volume without extending the task by the same proportion. Exclude fixed-volume jobs such as filling a kettle, pot, or basin because a slower stream generally takes longer but delivers the same total water.
Why doesn't the calculator multiply savings by the number of aerators?
People's total faucet-running minutes are distributed among the available sinks. Multiplying the same minutes by every aerator would overcount use. Instead, set the share of use served by upgraded aerators; the aerator count is used only for project costs and rebates.
Can this estimate kitchen faucet savings?
Yes, if you enter the kitchen faucet's measured or rated flows and appropriate running time. The kitchen preset is not WaterSense labeled because EPA does not currently have WaterSense criteria for kitchen faucets.
Should the utility rate include sewer charges?
Include the metered wastewater portion if it changes when water use falls. Exclude fixed or minimum charges that remain on the bill. For tiered rates, use the marginal rate that applies to the water likely to be saved.
Does the calculator include hot-water energy savings?
No. Some faucet water is heated, so an aerator may also reduce energy use, but the hot-water share, heater efficiency, temperatures, and energy rates vary. This calculator intentionally reports water and variable water/sewer savings only.
