How PDF filling works in the browser

PDF.js renders a local preview of each page. Your item positions and sizes are stored as proportions of the visible page, so they remain aligned when you zoom the preview. During export, each item is rendered locally as a high-resolution image and PDF-lib draws it onto a copy of the selected PDF. Existing page content is not intentionally rasterized, and the original file is not overwritten.

Text and note fields accept up to 500 characters, font sizes are limited to 8–72 points, one PDF can be up to 200 MB, and a document can contain up to 250 added items. These are browser-safety guardrails rather than guarantees: available memory, complex PDFs, and mobile hardware may impose lower practical limits.

Important: The exported additions are flattened visible graphics, not interactive AcroForm or XFA fields and not PDF comment objects. Editing a certificate-signed PDF can invalidate its existing digital signature. For official forms, regulated submissions, or legal documents, confirm the recipient’s format and signing requirements. This tool does not provide legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

Does my PDF get uploaded?

No. The PDF and annotation content are read and processed in browser memory. Normal page resources such as analytics and ads may still make network requests, subject to consent choices, but this tool does not include the selected file or annotation text in those requests.

Can I fill existing interactive PDF form fields?

This tool places new visible text, checkmarks, checked boxes, and note boxes over the page. It does not detect, populate, validate, or preserve the behavior of AcroForm or XFA form fields.

Are annotations editable after download?

No. The added items are flattened into the downloaded page as visible graphics. They are not exported as interactive form fields, comments, or removable PDF annotation objects.

Can I annotate more than one page?

Yes. Add items to the current page, navigate to another page, and continue. The annotation list lets you return to any placed item before download.

Can I move annotations precisely with a keyboard?

Yes. Focus a placed item and use an arrow key to move it by a small step. Hold Shift with an arrow key for a larger step. Press Delete or Backspace to remove the focused item.

Will this change the original PDF?

No. The original file on your device is not overwritten. The tool creates a new PDF copy with the visible items drawn over the selected pages.

Are password-protected PDFs supported?

No password is requested. If the browser libraries cannot open or modify an encrypted or permission-restricted PDF, use an authorized unlocked copy.

Is there a file-size or annotation limit?

The page accepts one PDF up to 200 MB and up to 250 placed items as browser-safety guardrails. Available memory and PDF complexity can impose lower practical limits, especially on mobile devices.

Does this tool provide document signing or legal advice?

No. It is a visual document-filling tool. It does not verify identity, create a certificate-based signature, determine a document’s legal validity, or provide legal advice.

What should I check before sharing the result?

Open the downloaded PDF in the viewer the recipient is likely to use. Inspect every edited page for clipping, overlap, legibility, correct answers, and any requirements for interactive fields, comments, or digital signatures.
