Pressure cooking commonly takes about one-third to one-half of traditional cooking time. This calculator therefore multiplies time at pressure by 2 to 3 for a first-check stovetop or covered-oven range. It selects slow-cooker bands from published conventional-to-slow-cooker guidance rather than inventing a precise multiplier.

Safety and method limits

Use a similar tested recipe and the appliance manual. Pressure-cooker models, pressure levels, food size, fill depth, altitude, and release method all affect results. Never force open a pressurized cooker.

How to convert a pressure-cooker recipe

  1. Read the original timing correctly. Enter only the minutes after pressure is reached. The tool adds the selected come-up and release periods separately.
  2. Convert the method, not only the clock. Traditional methods evaporate more liquid; a slow cooker evaporates less. Use the liquid amount and vessel from a similar recipe written for the target method.
  3. Preserve ingredient size. Thick meat, whole beans, dense vegetables, and large batches heat differently. If the target recipe uses different cuts or quantities, follow its timing.
  4. Begin checking at the early end. Continue until both texture and safe internal temperature are correct. Add dairy, pasta, seafood, and delicate vegetables late when appropriate.

Times between published bands are assigned to the closest band. Traditional midpoints below 15 minutes or above 3 hours do not receive a generic slow-cooker schedule.

Formula and assumptions

For pressure time P minutes, the traditional first-check range is 2P to 3P. The displayed time is rounded to the nearest minute below 30 minutes and to the nearest 5 minutes at 30 minutes or more. Total pressure-cooker elapsed time is come-up + P + release.

Stovetop and oven results share a time range because the source guidance describes “traditional” or conventional cooking broadly. The dish selection changes the practical method note, not the numerical range. The tool does not claim that every recipe transfers directly between a simmering burner and an oven.

How do I convert pressure-cooker time to regular cooking time?

Multiply the minutes at pressure by 2 to 3 for a broad stovetop or covered-oven starting range. Then compare with a similar tested recipe because food size, liquid, vessel, and heat level matter.

Does pressure-cooker time include coming to pressure?

Usually no. Recipe timing typically starts when the cooker reaches pressure. Use the come-up and release controls to see a more realistic full elapsed-time range.

Can I use the pressure-cooker liquid amount on the stovetop or in the oven?

Not automatically. Pressure cookers lose very little moisture, while a stovetop pan or oven vessel may evaporate much more. Start with the liquid from a similar target-method recipe and monitor it.

Why did the tool not give me a slow-cooker time?

The published chart covers traditional times from 15 minutes to 3 hours. Outside that range, a generic slow-cooker schedule would be too speculative, especially for delicate or very long-cooking foods.

Should I use quick or natural release?

Follow the original recipe and your appliance manual. A natural release continues cooking and is often gentler for foamy foods and large cuts; a quick release stops pressure cooking sooner but can cause vigorous steam and liquid movement.

Can I use this for pressure canning?

No. Pressure canning is a separate food-preservation process with tested times, pressures, jar sizes, recipes, and altitude rules. Never use this calculator for canning.
