Speedometer correction formulas

The tire calculation converts a metric size such as 225/65R17 into nominal unloaded diameter:

diameter (in) = rim diameter + 2 × (width in mm × aspect ratio ÷ 100 ÷ 25.4)

For a speed signal measured before the differential, the road-speed ratio combines tire diameter and axle gearing:

actual ÷ indicated = (new diameter ÷ original diameter) × (original axle ratio ÷ new axle ratio)

For a wheel-speed or ABS-based signal, omit the axle-ratio term. A result of 1.050 means actual speed is estimated to be 5% higher than the display; 0.950 means it is 5% lower.

Two ratios serve different jobs. A signal calibrator correction factor is commonly actual ÷ indicated. Expected sensor pulses per mile or kilometer change by the reciprocal, indicated ÷ actual. Always follow the labels and instructions for the exact calibration device.

How to use the result

  1. Confirm the baseline. Use the tire size and axle ratio for which the speedometer is currently calibrated, not merely the parts that were previously installed.
  2. Use reliable tire data. Manufacturer revolutions-per-mile or rolling-circumference data is preferable to nominal sidewall math when available.
  3. Identify the signal architecture. Vehicle service information should show whether the relevant signal comes from the transmission, transfer case, differential, wheel hub, or another module.
  4. Apply the correct factor. Reprogram only with the vehicle or device maker’s procedure. A displayed multiplier, pulses-per-distance value, tire circumference, and tire revs per mile are not interchangeable settings.
  5. Verify after calibration. Have the result checked safely with approved diagnostic equipment or a measured-distance procedure. Do not interact with a phone or calculator while driving.

Nominal diameter versus real rolling circumference

Sidewall size is a convenient estimate, not a measurement of the tire on the road. Two tire models with the same marked size can have different published overall diameters or revolutions per mile. Load, inflation, tread depth, rim width, growth at speed, and deformation at the contact patch also affect effective rolling circumference.

For a closer estimate, select Overall diameter and use comparable manufacturer specifications for both tires. For the most application-specific calibration, use the vehicle maker’s accepted tire-revolution or rolling-distance method.

Speedometer calibration FAQs

Do larger tires make the speedometer read fast or slow?

With gearing unchanged, larger tires usually make the speedometer read low: the vehicle travels farther on each wheel revolution than the original calibration assumes. Smaller tires usually make it read high.

Does a numerically higher axle ratio cancel larger tires?

It can offset some or all of the error when the speed signal is taken before the differential. The exact combined factor is the tire-diameter ratio multiplied by the inverse axle-ratio change. Axle gearing does not cancel tire error in the calculator’s wheel-speed/ABS model.

What does 3.73:1 axle ratio mean?

It means the driveshaft or pinion turns about 3.73 times for one axle rotation. A change to 4.10:1 is numerically higher and produces more upstream shaft rotations per wheel rotation.

Can I calculate a replacement mechanical speedometer gear?

If you enter the current driven-gear tooth count, the tool estimates the ideal new tooth count and the nearest whole tooth. Gear availability, compatible tooth ranges, drive-gear teeth, transmission design, and adapter ratios still have to be checked.

Will the odometer have the same percentage error?

Often the same distance-signal error affects both speed and accumulated distance, but modern vehicles can process or source these values differently. Confirm the architecture and calibration procedure for the specific vehicle.

Is GPS speed exact enough to calibrate a speedometer?

GPS can be a useful cross-check with steady speed, clear sky, and a straight level route, but update lag, reception, road grade, and device quality matter. Use a safe passenger-assisted or professional verification method and follow local law.

Are my tire and speed inputs tracked?

No. The calculation runs locally in your browser. This tool does not upload, store, or attach input values to analytics events.

Limits and safety disclaimer

  • This calculator predicts a mathematical ratio. It does not test instrument-cluster tolerances, tire suitability, wheel clearance, brake clearance, load capacity, handling, stability-control behavior, TPMS compatibility, emissions compliance, or legal roadworthiness.
  • Use only vehicle-approved tire and wheel combinations unless a qualified professional and applicable manufacturer guidance confirm otherwise. AWD and 4WD vehicles can be sensitive to circumference differences between axles.
  • The gear-ratio term applies only when the speed signal is upstream of the final drive. Transfer-case ratios, portal axles, auxiliary gearboxes, reluctor changes, and module-specific calculations are outside this model.
  • Do not use the estimated actual speed to justify exceeding a posted limit. Until properly verified, drive conservatively and treat an uncertain speedometer as a safety defect.
