How to use the calculator

  1. For a home germination check, enter the total seeds tested and the number that produced normal seedlings. If you have a current seed tag, select the percentage option instead.
  2. Enter the seed-lot purity. Add seeds per pound or thousand-seed weight if you want a stand target converted to bulk seed weight.
  3. Choose Target established stand when the recommendation is a final plant count. Choose Recommended PLS weight rate only when the published rate is explicitly stated as PLS weight.
  4. Enter the net area that will actually be planted, calculate, then use the per-area rate for calibration and the total for purchasing or allocation.
Important: This calculator corrects a target you supply; it does not choose the right seeding rate for a crop or site. Variety, planting date, seedbed, equipment, climate, soil, and local regulations can change the appropriate rate.

Germination, PLS, and seeding-rate formulas

Germination % = normal seedlings ÷ seeds tested × 100

Count normal seedlings, not merely swollen seed or seedlings unable to continue normal growth. The displayed 95% interval is a Wilson binomial interval showing sampling uncertainty; it is not a guarantee for the full seed lot.

PLS fraction = germination fraction × purity fraction

Example: 85% germination × 98% purity = 83.3% PLS. PLS describes the proportion of bulk seed weight expected to be pure, germinable seed.

Pure crop seeds to sow = target plants ÷ (germination × field emergence)

Field emergence is applied after the controlled germination result. When seed weight is known, the calculated pure-seed weight is divided by purity to estimate bulk product weight.

Bulk weight rate = recommended PLS weight rate ÷ PLS fraction

Example: 10 lb PLS/ac ÷ 0.80 = 12.5 lb of bulk seed/ac. Do not apply field emergence again if the agronomic recommendation is already stated as a PLS rate.

Worked examples

Target stand from an 85-of-100 germination test

A test produces 85 normal seedlings from 100 seeds, so germination is 85%. To establish 100,000 plants/ac with 90% field emergence, sow 100,000 ÷ (0.85 × 0.90) = 130,719 pure crop seeds/ac. With 3,000 seeds/lb and 98% purity, that is about 44.46 lb of bulk seed/ac.

Correcting a forage recommendation stated as PLS

A seed lot with 85% germination and 98% purity is 83.3% PLS. A recommendation of 10 lb PLS/ac therefore requires 10 ÷ 0.833 = 12.00 lb of bulk seed/ac, or about 120.05 lb for 10 acres.

How do I calculate seed germination percentage?

Divide normal, healthy seedlings by seeds tested and multiply by 100. If 42 of 50 seeds produce normal seedlings, germination is 84%.

What is pure live seed (PLS)?

PLS is the share of a bulk lot that is both the intended pure seed and capable of germinating. Multiply purity by germination, using both as decimals, or multiply the percentages and divide by 100.

How do I adjust a PLS seeding recommendation?

Divide the recommended PLS weight rate by the PLS fraction. A 10 lb PLS/ac recommendation and 80% PLS require 12.5 lb of bulk product/ac.

Why is field emergence separate from germination?

Germination is measured under controlled favorable conditions. Field emergence reflects additional losses from temperature, moisture, crusting, planting depth, disease, vigor, and equipment performance.

Should hard or dormant seed be counted as germinated?

Not in a simple normal-seedling count. Some official labels and crop recommendations incorporate hard or dormant seed into total viability, so follow the seed label and applicable local guidance when those categories are reported.

How many seeds should I test?

A 100-seed home test makes the percentage easy to read, but a larger representative sample or several equal replicates reduces sampling uncertainty. Certified tests follow crop-specific official procedures.

Limitations and common mistakes

  • Do not confuse a home paper-towel test with an official test conducted under crop-specific temperature, duration, and evaluation rules.
  • Do not count abnormal seedlings as successful germination merely because a root or shoot appeared.
  • Do not use PLS-weight mode for a recommendation stated as ordinary bulk pounds per acre; that would overcorrect the rate.
  • Purity is a weight-based seed-label measure. Count-mode conversion assumes the entered seed weight describes the pure crop seed, then corrects the resulting weight for purity.
  • The calculated amount does not account for drill calibration error, seed treatment flow, skips, doubles, headlands, overlap, or an unentered reserve.

Methodology and sources

The calculator uses full floating-point precision internally. Large seed counts display as whole seeds, percentages use up to two decimals, and weights use up to three decimals. It does not transmit form values or store them in local storage.
