How to Use the Crop Rotation Planner
- Define equal planning areas. A “bed” can be a raised bed, field block, or other area that can receive the next rotation slot. Split mixed or unequal spaces when that makes the history clearer.
- Enter a local frost reference. The same month and day is carried into each displayed year. It is only a date anchor, not a weather forecast.
- Set the year-one slots. Select a preset or type a crop name, then confirm the botanical family and outdoor planting method. Preset timing and maturity values remain fully editable.
- Generate and inspect. Each slot advances one bed per year. Review the family-return interval and make sure unrelated crop names have not been assigned to the same family by mistake.
- Replace estimates before planting. Use variety-specific seed-packet instructions, local extension calendars, soil temperature, current weather, and observed crop development.
Rotation and Schedule Method

Succession planting N = first planting date + (N − 1) × succession interval
Estimated first harvest = planting date + days to maturity
Inclusive harvest end = first harvest + harvest-window days − 1
The tool compares botanical family labels around the complete circular slot sequence. “Returns after 4 years” means the family is planted in a bed, three other annual slots intervene, and the family comes back in the fourth following season. Duplicate family labels can shorten that interval even when the crop names differ.
The date calculation treats “days to maturity” as beginning at the selected outdoor event. If a packet counts from emergence or uses a different transplant basis, edit the value or use the dedicated harvest planner.
Worked Four-Bed Example
The default plan begins with tomato, bush bean, carrot, and broccoli in Beds 1–4. In year two, tomato moves to Bed 2, bush bean to Bed 3, carrot to Bed 4, and broccoli wraps to Bed 1. After four annual moves, each slot has visited every bed.
With a last spring frost of April 15, a tomato offset of +14 days produces an April 29 transplant date. A 75-day maturity estimate produces a July 13 first harvest, and a 21-day inclusive harvest window ends August 2. These are calendar estimates; a local cultivar and season may behave differently.
Crop Rotation FAQ
How does the planner move crops?
Each slot starts in the same-numbered bed in year one, then moves forward one bed per year. The last slot wraps to Bed 1. The cycle length therefore equals the number of beds.
Why rotate by plant family?
Related crops can share pests, diseases, and cultural requirements. Tomato, pepper, potato, and eggplant are different crops but all belong to Solanaceae, so changing only the crop name does not create a family break.
How are the planting dates calculated?
Each crop's editable offset is added to the entered average last spring frost date. For example, −21 means 21 days before that reference; +14 means 14 days after it.
Are the crop presets exact?
No. They are broad worked examples. Variety, sowing depth, soil temperature, weather, transplant age, and the packet's definition of maturity can all change the real schedule.
Can one bed contain several crops?
Treat each slot as the main crop family for that area. If multiple families share a bed, divide it into smaller planning beds or enter the family most important to the pest and disease history you are managing.
What does a short family return mean?
It means the same family label comes back to a bed after relatively few annual moves. It is a planning alert, not a diagnosis or guarantee of pest pressure.
Does this include indoor seed starting?
No. The date is for the selected outdoor event: direct sow, transplant, set or tuber planting, or cover-crop establishment. Plan nursery time separately.
Are my crop names and dates stored?
No. Calculations run locally in the browser, and the tool does not save the entered plan.

Planning Limits
This planner does not model cultivar-specific disease resistance, pathogen survival, volunteer crops, perennial crops, cover-crop termination, companion planting, nutrient budgets, pesticide restrictions, soil temperature, weather forecasts, irrigation, protected cultivation, or harvest labor. Rotation can support a broader integrated pest and soil-management plan, but it cannot prevent every pest or disease. Keep an actual planting history and use local extension or agronomic guidance for the crop, site, and diagnosed problem.
