The model uses simple, transparent multipliers for learning/budgeting. Real insurers use detailed medical underwriting and eligibility checks.
How this estimator works
We start from a base monthly premium and apply pet, location and plan design multipliers (species, breed risk, age, weight, neuter status, vet-cost index, claims, annual limit, reimbursement, deductible and type). Optional wellness/dental/exam/alternative therapy add-ons are flat monthly costs. We show monthly and annual totals, with tax applied per your setting.
- Not a quote: Real prices depend on provider eligibility, medical history, and waiting periods.
- Privacy: Everything runs in your browser — no data leaves this page.
- Tip: Adjust deductible and reimbursement to see trade-offs between monthly cost and potential claims payout.
Pet Insurance 101 — What Each Input Means (and how we estimate)
This calculator is an educational estimator that shows how typical pet insurance pricing can move based on your choices. It uses a transparent base cost and applies clear multipliers for species, breed risk, age, size/weight, location vet-cost index, claims history, and plan design (annual limit, reimbursement %, deductible, and deductible type). The goal is to help you run “what-if” scenarios privately in your browser. It is not a quote or advice, and it doesn’t reflect a specific insurer’s underwriting rules in the UK, EU, or US.
Pet factors (who your companion is)
- Species: Dogs typically rate higher than cats due to higher average claim frequency and treatment costs. The species selector applies a baseline multiplier.
- Breed risk tier: Some breeds carry hereditary or orthopedic tendencies (e.g., hip dysplasia, brachycephalic airway issues). Use the tier (Low / Standard / High) as a proxy; the estimator scales price up or down accordingly.
- Age (years): As pets get older, the probability and cost of claims generally rise. Our curve gently increases pricing with age bands to reflect expected severity.
- Weight (kg): Larger dogs can have higher treatment costs (medication dosage, surgery). We apply a modest size factor for dogs; cats generally see little change from weight alone.
- Neutered/Spayed: Many providers apply a small discount due to reduced certain risks; the estimator reflects a minor reduction when selected.
Location & history (where you live and past claims)
- Location vet-cost index: Veterinary fees vary by area (big cities vs. smaller towns). Choose Low/Medium/High to approximate local price levels; the multiplier scales the base cost before plan design effects.
- Claims in the last 2 years: Recent claims can signal higher expected costs. We model a small step-up per claim that tapers after a few incidents.
Plan design (what you’re buying)
- Annual limit: The maximum the policy pays in a policy year. Higher limits cost more because the insurer’s potential payout increases. The estimator steps through common bands (e.g., £/$/€3k, 5k, 10k, 20k, Unlimited).
- Reimbursement %: The share the insurer pays on eligible costs after the deductible. Moving from 70%→80%→90% increases premium; our model applies a smooth uplift per percentage point.
- Deductible / Excess: What you pay first on claims. Higher deductibles reduce premium up to a capped effect (to keep the math realistic and avoid driving the price unrealistically low).
- Deductible type: Annual applies once per policy year; Per-incident can apply to multiple conditions and typically prices higher. The selector adds a small surcharge for per-incident.
- Add-ons: Wellness/routine care, dental illness, exam fee cover, and alternative therapies are modeled as flat monthly amounts. These behave more like fixed benefits than pure risk transfer, so they’re additive, not multiplicative.
How the estimate is calculated
We start with a base monthly cost representing a mid-risk cat in a medium-cost area on a balanced plan (e.g., £/$/€5k limit, 80% reimbursement, moderate deductible). We multiply by your pet factors (species, breed tier, age, weight, neuter status) and location/claims modifiers. We then apply plan design multipliers (limit, reimbursement, deductible, deductible type) and add any flat costs for optional extras. Finally, we apply your local tax rate (IPT/VAT) and display monthly and annual totals, plus a clear breakdown table and CSV export.
Important: Real policies vary by provider and jurisdiction and may include waiting periods, exam requirements, age/breed restrictions, bilateral condition rules, and exclusions for pre-existing conditions. This tool is for budgeting and learning only; always read actual policy documents and speak to licensed providers before buying.
