What the current Army standard calculates

Quick answer: the current Army calculation is waist circumference ÷ height. A recorded WHtR below 0.550 meets the standard; 0.550 does not. Digits after the third decimal place are discarded rather than rounded.

Why there is no body-fat percentage: “Army Body Fat Calculator” remains a common search phrase, but Army Directive 2026-13 rescinded the earlier circumference-based body-fat assessments. How to use the calculator

  1. Choose imperial or metric. Official Army recording uses inches. For a personal estimate, centimetres produce the same ratio when both inputs use centimetres.
  2. Enter standing height. Measure without shoes and keep the body upright.
  3. Measure the waist at the navel. Keep the flexible tape level and record the measurement without mixing units.
  4. Review the recorded result. The calculator shows the raw division, the official-style truncated value, the 0.550 boundary waist for the entered height, and the distance from that boundary.

The boundary waist equals height × 0.550. A waist exactly at that boundary does not meet the standard.

Limits, measurement error, and official use

  • This page is independent of the Department of the Army and cannot create or replace a DA Form 5500, ATIS entry, trained measurement, command determination, or medical evaluation.
  • A small tape-placement, posture, clothing, breathing, or rounding difference can change a result near 0.550. Do not treat the margin as a health diagnosis or guaranteed official outcome.
  • Army guidance states that a different team conducts a same-duty-day confirmation measurement when the initial result does not meet the standard.
  • Pregnancy and postpartum exemptions, medical examinations, cadet or accession rules, administrative actions, and implementation details require the current controlling policy.
  • WHtR describes central size relative to height. It does not directly measure total body-fat percentage, muscle mass, fitness, readiness, or an individual medical condition.

What is the current Army body fat standard?

Since July 7, 2026, the Army's sole authorized body composition standard is a waist-to-height ratio below 0.550. The earlier circumference-based body-fat percentage methods and height-weight tables were rescinded.

How is Army waist-to-height ratio calculated?

Divide waist circumference at the navel by standing height, using the same unit for both. The official result is recorded to three decimal places by discarding later digits rather than rounding.

Does 0.550 pass the Army standard?

No. The Army standard is less than, but not equal to, 0.550. A recorded 0.549 meets the standard; 0.550 does not.

Does the current Army test calculate body fat percentage?

No. Despite the common search name “Army Body Fat Calculator,” the current Army assessment uses WHtR and does not calculate body-fat percentage. Previous body-fat assessment methods were rescinded.

Is the standard different by age or sex?

No. Army Directive 2026-13 establishes one WHtR standard without the former age- and sex-specific body-fat percentage tables.

What happens if a Soldier records 0.550 or higher?

Army guidance says a different team must conduct a confirmation measurement on the same duty day. Official personnel decisions must use the Army's process and current forms, not this unofficial calculator.

Can I use centimetres?

Yes for a personal estimate, because centimetres divided by centimetres gives the same ratio as inches divided by inches. Official Army recording procedures use inches.

Is this an official Army assessment?

No. This is an independent educational calculator. Measurement technique, official confirmation, exemptions, forms, and administrative decisions are controlled by current Army policy and trained personnel.
