⌨️ Keyboard Typing Distance

Convert the number of words you typed into how many meters your fingers likely “walked.” Private by design—everything runs in your browser.

Your Inputs

Roughly how many words you typed (any text editor or doc word count).
Letters only. (Spaces/punctuation handled below.)
Accounts for Shift, Backspace, punctuation, arrow keys, etc.
If “Yes,” we add one space per word to the keystroke count.
Fun estimate — adjust assumptions to match your style.

Results

Estimated finger walking distance:
meters
kilometers
Adjust “characters per word,” extra keystrokes, and movement per keystroke to fit your typing.
Tip: Try the presets, then tweak until the results “feel” right for your keyboard and habits.

How we estimate distance (friendly math)

We estimate total keystrokes from your word count, then multiply by an average sideways finger movement per keystroke. (This is the “walking” across the key tops, not the up-down key press depth.)

  • Characters per word (CPW): default 5 letters per word.
  • Spaces: optionally add 1 space per word.
  • Extra keystrokes: a small percentage for Shift, Backspace, punctuation, arrows, etc.
  • Movement per keystroke: presets from 1.2–1.9 cm (you can set a custom value).

Formula:

keystrokes = words × (CPW + (includeSpace? 1 : 0)) × (1 + extraFraction)
distance (meters) = keystrokes × movementPerKeystrokeMeters

Real finger paths vary with keyboard size, layout (QWERTY, Colemak, etc.), and your technique. That’s why everything is adjustable.

Be kind to your hands 💛

  • Take regular breaks and stretch.
  • Keep wrists neutral and shoulders relaxed.
  • Consider keyboard angle and chair height for comfort.
