Formulas and assumptions

This tool calculates each row from its installed bead volume, combines the rows, applies one waste allowance, and divides by the selected package volume. It estimates quantity, not product suitability.

  • Rectangular joint area: width x depth
  • Triangular fillet bead area: 0.5 x width x depth
  • Round bead area: π x diameter² / 4
  • Row volume: cross-section area x length x quantity
  • Project volume: sum of all row volumes
  • Waste-adjusted volume: sealant volume x (1 + waste% / 100)
  • Packages: waste-adjusted volume / package volume, rounded up when selected.

For imperial package conversion, the calculator uses 1 US fl oz = 1.8046875 cu in. For metric package conversion, it uses 1 ml = 1 cu cm.

For a triangular fillet with the same width and depth, theoretical coverage is twice the rectangular value. Use the calculator for round beads and mixed schedules.

How to measure caulk or sealant joints

  1. Divide the project into joint rows. Group only sections with the same profile and dimensions. Put windows, doors, corners, and expansion joints in separate rows when they differ.
  2. Measure the installed cross-section. Use width and depth for a filled rectangular joint, the two legs for a triangular corner fillet, or finished diameter for a round nozzle bead.
  3. Average uneven gaps. Measure at several representative points and use a conservative average. If a gap changes materially, split it into two or more rows instead of hiding the variation in one average.
  4. Allow for tooling. Tooling can flatten a round bead or remove material from a corner fillet. Enter the finished profile you expect after tooling, not only the nozzle opening.
  5. Account for backer rod. Backer rod controls installed depth, supports tooling, and helps prevent three-sided adhesion that can restrict movement. Enter sealant depth above the rod, not the full cavity depth.
  6. Select the labeled package volume. Add waste for starts, stops, surface texture, nozzle purge, and cleanup, then round up for ordering.

Worked caulk and sealant examples

Bathroom seam — triangular bead (imperial)

Inputs: 40 ft total, 3/16 in wide × 3/16 in deep triangular fillet, 10.1 US fl oz cartridge, 10% waste.

Work: area = 0.5 × 0.1875 × 0.1875 = 0.017578 sq in. Volume = 0.017578 × 480 in = 8.4375 cu in (4.675 fl oz). One cartridge covers 86.4 ft before waste. Adjusted volume = 5.143 fl oz; exact packages = 5.143 / 10.1 = 0.51. Order 1 cartridge.

Window or trim runs — round bead (metric)

Inputs: 30 m total, 6 mm finished diameter, 300 ml cartridge, 15% waste.

Work: area = π × 6² / 4 = 28.274 sq mm. Volume = 28.274 × 30,000 = 848,230 cu mm (848.2 ml). One cartridge covers 10.61 m. Adjusted volume = 975.5 ml; exact packages = 975.5 / 300 = 3.25. Order 4 cartridges.

Expansion joint — rectangular profile (metric)

Inputs: 12 m total, 20 mm wide × 10 mm deep, 600 ml sausage pack, 10% waste.

Work: area = 20 × 10 = 200 sq mm. Volume = 200 × 12,000 = 2,400,000 cu mm (2,400 ml). One pack covers 3.0 m. Adjusted volume = 2,640 ml; exact packages = 2,640 / 600 = 4.40. Order 5 sausage packs.

Product-selection boundary

This is a quantity estimator only. Bathroom silicone is commonly chosen for wet areas; paintable acrylic caulk is often used for low-movement interior trim; and exterior or movement joints may require an elastomeric silicone, polyurethane, or hybrid sealant. Those are categories, not recommendations. Substrate, primer, movement rating, water exposure, paintability, cure chemistry, temperature, and code requirements must be checked against the product technical data sheet.

For glazing, firestopping, waterproofing, structural silicone, traffic joints, or specified assemblies, follow the approved project specification. Joint proportions and maximum dimensions are product-specific.

Benchmark checks: the formula returns 24.3 ft for a 10.1 fl oz cartridge at a 1/4 × 1/4 in rectangular joint. It also returns 3.0 m for 300 ml and 6.0 m for 600 ml at 10 × 10 mm, matching the published Sikaflex-11 FC Purform consumption table. Caulk and sealant FAQs

How many linear feet does a tube of caulk cover?

Coverage changes with bead cross-section. A 10.1 US fl oz cartridge theoretically covers about 24.3 ft at a 1/4 × 1/4 in rectangular joint, or about 97.2 ft at 1/8 × 1/8 in, before waste.

How many tubes are needed for a bathtub or shower?

A typical 25–40 ft bathroom seam with a 3/16 × 3/16 in triangular bead uses about 0.3–0.5 of a 10.1 fl oz cartridge before waste. One cartridge is usually enough if every seam uses that profile, but measure your actual run.

What size bead should I enter?

Enter the installed cross-section after tooling: width and depth for rectangular joints, the two leg dimensions for triangular corner fillets, or finished diameter for round beads. Measure an average and split unlike sections into separate rows.

Is a 10 oz tube the same as a 10.1 oz cartridge?

No. Use the exact package label. A 10.1 fl oz cartridge contains about 1% more volume than 10 fl oz. Also, fluid ounces measure volume and are not the same as ounces of weight.

Can this calculate silicone sealant?

Yes. The volume method works for silicone, acrylic caulk, polyurethane sealant, and similar products. The calculator estimates quantity only; it does not confirm product suitability.

How much waste should I add?

10% is a practical starting allowance for nozzle loss, tooling, starts, stops, and modest variation. Consider 15–20% for rough or uneven gaps, difficult access, or many short runs.

When should I use backer rod?

Backer rod is commonly used in deeper or moving joints to control sealant depth, support tooling, and help prevent three-sided adhesion. Follow the sealant technical data sheet for required joint proportions and backing material.
