Formulas and assumptions
This tool estimates sealant from installed bead volume. It assumes a consistent joint size and does not choose a product, joint design, cure schedule, or movement rating.

For imperial package conversion, the calculator uses 1 US fl oz = 1.8046875 cu in. For metric package conversion, it uses 1 ml = 1 cu cm.
How to measure caulk or sealant joints
- Measure the total linear run of matching joints. Add all sides of windows, doors, tubs, counters, panels, or control joints that use the same bead size.
- Measure the expected sealant width and installed depth after backer rod, bond breaker tape, or tooling.
- Use rectangular shape for a filled gap or expansion joint. Use triangular shape for a tooled fillet bead at an inside corner.
- Choose the product package volume from the label, then add waste for starts, stops, surface texture, nozzle purge, and cleanup.

This is a quantity estimator only. Sealant performance depends on substrate preparation, primer, backer rod sizing, joint movement, adhesion, cure conditions, exposure, tooling, and manufacturer instructions. For movement joints, glazing, firestopping, waterproofing, structural silicone, or code-regulated assemblies, follow the product data sheet and project specification.
Caulk and sealant FAQs
How many feet does a 10.1 oz tube cover?
It depends on the bead size. At a 1/4 in by 1/4 in rectangular joint, one 10.1 fl oz cartridge covers about 24 ft before waste. A smaller 1/8 in by 1/8 in bead covers about four times as much.
Should I include backer rod in the calculation?
Do not add backer rod volume. Instead, enter the final sealant depth after backer rod is installed. Backer rod usually reduces sealant volume by controlling depth.
Why does a triangular bead need less sealant?
A triangular fillet bead is approximated as half of a rectangle with the same width and depth, so the cross-section area is roughly half as large.
Can I use this for construction adhesive?
Yes for simple bead-volume planning, if you can describe the adhesive bead width and height. Product coverage can vary with nozzle cut, squeeze-out, substrate texture, and application pattern.
